High explosives for oil & gas drilling

Perforating charges are currently used in casing guns, through tubing guns and tubing conveyed guns for oil well completion. The permanent goal for oil drilling companies is to increase the yield of oil wells: this is achieved thanks to heat resistant explosives, which are used at great depth to clear the way for the oil.

Indeed, heat resistance is an important quality for explosives used for perforating deep oil wells, since the temperature in a drilled hole increases with the depth. In that way, EURENCO works in close partnership with shaped charge manufacturers and produces heat resistant explosives suited for the oil industry and also used in the gas industry:

RDX

RDX is used as initiation and main explosive of shaped charges for oil well perforation. The high explosives for this market are specially designed to achieve cost efficient production of pressed charges: translated to the powder, it means good flow, constant bulk densities and consistency within and between lots.

Highly Purified HMX

EURENCO applies a special purification during HMX production for oil well applications. This quality will therefore have an extra good thermal resistance in comparison with HMX specified in the military standards.

HNS

Owing to its stability at high temperature and its excellent performance, HNS is used in perforating charges for completion of very hot oil & gas wells; HNS can withstand temperatures around 250-300°C for short times. A special quality coated with an high temperature resistant polymer is also produced. This quality is of interest for its improved flow characteristics and the improved mechanical stability for the charges.

DADNPO

The new high explosive DADNPO can tolerate about 40°C higher temperatures than HNS with the same degree of degradation. This means that this explosive can be used in hotter wells than HNS. EURENCO can provide sample quantities of this compound through small-scale production.

EURENCO can also study particular demands for new energetic molecules in its multipurpose plants.
